Shrimp Farming in the Digital Age: Insights from Eruvaka

Years ago, during one of my first visits to Ecuador, I walked into the Skretting office in Guayaquil and met a young, driven professional named Kunal Choudhary. At the time, he was spearheading the development of Skretting 360+, already showing a deep passion for advancing shrimp farming through innovation.

Fast forward to today, and Kunal is now the CEO of Eruvaka Technologies, a global frontrunner in smart shrimp feeding—now part of the Nutreco family. Over the years, I’ve had the chance to collaborate with him on several strategy projects for Nutreco and have consistently been impressed by his vision, sharp thinking, and relentless commitment to bringing cutting-edge technology to the pond.

In this advertorial, I invite you to dive deeper into the groundbreaking work Eruvaka is doing—and how Kunal and his team are shaping the future of shrimp aquaculture.

Transforming Shrimp Farming with Technology

In the ever-evolving world of aquaculture, technology is no longer a luxury—it is a necessity. Eruvaka Technologies has been at the forefront of this transformation, pioneering IoT-based solutions that enhance efficiency, sustainability, and profitability for shrimp farmers worldwide. With over a decade of expertise, Eruvaka now transforms more than 45,000 hectares of aquaculture farms, producing over 500,000 MT of shrimp across 12+ countries. Eruvaka helps farmers increase productivity and manage risk while optimizing costs.

Addressing Key Challenges in Shrimp Farming

Shrimp farming is a dynamic but a challenging industry. Farmers face two major hurdles—volatile shrimp prices and biological risks. Profitability hinges on the ability to reduce costs while increasing the output.

Eruvaka addresses these challenges through precision farming solutions that improve feed conversion ratios (FCRs), increase biomass per hectare, and manage biological risks through real-time monitoring. By leveraging data-driven decision-making, shrimp farmers can optimize growth, improve survival rates, and strengthen biosecurity—ultimately increasing profitability while ensuring long-term sustainability.

Smart Solutions Driving Efficiency

Eruvaka’s suite of intelligent solutions empowers shrimp farmers with real-time insights and automation to streamline operations:

  • PondMother: An intelligent automatic feeder that dispenses small amounts of feed at regular intervals, ensuring a constant supply of fresh feed. This reduces waste, promotes  shrimp growth and survival, consequently improving FCRs. PondMother keeps pond bottoms cleaner, even in the high-density shrimp farms in Asia. Multiple versions of PondMother are available, customized for different pond conditions, geographies, and species.
  • ShrimpTalk: ShrimpTalk, our AI-based feeding system eliminates the uncertainty in the actual feed requirement of the shrimp by adapting the feeding  to the actual needs of the shrimp. This AI-powered feeder “listens” to shrimp sounds, analyzes feeding behavior through proprietary algorithms, and provides precise feeding recommendations, optimizing feed usage and ensuring healthier shrimp. This impacts an immediate optimization of the FCRs while maintaining good growth rates and survival.
  • PondGuard: While feeding efficiency is critical, water quality is just as essential. PondGuard continuously monitors dissolved oxygen levels and water temperature, instantly alerting farmers if conditions deviate from optimal thresholds. This early warning system helps prevent losses and improves overall pond health.
  • PondLogs: Acting as a centralized farm management system, PondLogs integrates all Eruvaka devices, analyzes farm data, and provides actionable insights. This comprehensive digital tool enhances operational efficiency and enables data-driven decision-making for better farm management.

By integrating these technologies, shrimp farmers can maximize yields while minimizing environmental impact, making their farms more productive and resilient.

Advancing Sustainable Aquaculture

Sustainability is at the core of Eruvaka’s innovation. All devices are solar-powered, reducing reliance on conventional energy sources. By optimizing feeding practices, Eruvaka minimizes feed wastage, lowering organic pollution in ponds and surrounding ecosystems.

For farmers supplying to major global retailers like Walmart, sustainability is also a market advantage. Eruvaka’s solutions help farmers demonstrate a 10–30% reduction in carbon footprint, improving market access and pricing opportunities while aligning with global sustainability standards.

Navigating Market Challenges with Data-Driven Insights

The past two years have been particularly challenging for shrimp farmers, with persistently low farm gate prices affecting profitability. As illustrated in the graph, farmers leveraging technology, especially AI-based solutions, have been able to sustain business, even during periods of low farm gate prices. The solid blue and orange lines represent the maximum and minimum prices for 30/40 count shrimp. The dotted lines reflect different costs-of-production (CoP) levels: the orange dotted line indicates the highest average CoP under manual farming; the blue dotted line shows a reduced average CoP with automatic feeding systems; and the green dotted line represents the lowest average CoP achieved through AI-powered sonic feeders like ShrimpTalk. Notably, only farmers using ShrimpTalk have managed to sustain operations amid falling farm gate prices. By reducing production costs and improving efficiency, Eruvaka’s technology offers a crucial buffer against market volatility, making it an indispensable tool for long-term resilience.

The Future of Shrimp Farming

As the industry continues to evolve, smart technology will play an increasingly pivotal role. Data-driven decision-making, automation, and precision farming are no longer optional—they are essential as there is no margin for error.

Eruvaka remains committed to empowering farmers with intelligent solutions that drive efficiency, sustainability, and profitability. With a technology-first approach, shrimp farming is becoming smarter, more connected, and better equipped to navigate future challenges. The future of aquaculture is here, and it is driven by innovation.
