India Shrimp Exports Start 2026 with Diverging Market Dynamics

Monthly Indian Shrimp Exports (January 2022 – January 2026)
Monthly Indian Shrimp Exports (January 2022 – January 2026)

India’s shrimp exports reached 50,564 MT in January 2026, up 3% YoY, while value declined slightly by 2% YoY to $347 million, largely a result of exports of less value-added and more raw products. This follows a strong 2025, where total exports grew 9% in volume and 14% in value. January’s modest volume growth comes against a high base and masks diverging trends across markets.

Products

Raw L. vannamei remains the backbone of India’s exports, accounting for 36,765 MT in January, up 3% YoY. Value-added exports continue to struggle, dropping 17% YoY to 4,664 MT. The drop of value-added has to do with the tariff situation in the US, which is its major outlet for value-added products, and the fact that India has not yet significantly penetrated the EU market for value-added products and hence cannot easily diversify.

Raw P. monodon continues its strong growth trajectory, rising 51% YoY to 3,670 MT. Increased exports in January signal that some packers still have inventory or that the crop is getting more distributed over the year. Wild-caught shrimp saw a modest recovery, increasing 5% YoY to 5,465 MT, though volumes remain structurally lower compared to previous years.

Markets

The most striking development is the sharp contraction in exports to the US, which fell 36% YoY to 13,888 MT, reflecting the consequences of the high reciprocal tariffs which were not yet lifted in January. In contrast, the EU remains a key growth driver, with exports increasing 49% YoY to 11,099 MT, continuing the strong momentum seen throughout 2025. China also showed significant growth, with imports rising 72% YoY to 9,016 MT, reinforcing its role as an increasingly important alternative market. Exports to Vietnam remained broadly stable at 3,618 MT (+1% YoY), following a year of strong growth driven by reprocessing trade. Japan posted moderate growth of 4% YoY to 2,392 MT.
