Indonesia Opens 2026 in Two Speeds

Monthly Indonesian Shrimp Exports (January 2022 – January 2026)
Monthly Indonesian Shrimp Exports (January 2022 – January 2026)

Totals

After a volatile 2025, Indonesia starts 2026 slightly below last year in volume but clearly stronger in value.

In 2025, exports ended flat in volume at 201,113 MT (0% YoY), but value still increased 11% to USD 1.78 billion. The year was marked by heavy swings. After solid growth through mid-year, shipments collapsed in October (-59% YoY) before rebounding strongly in December (+31% YoY), suggesting delayed shipments and catch-up flows at year-end.

January 2026 shows 16,070 MT, down 6% YoY. In contrast, export value reached USD 154 million, up 9% YoY. This implies a firmer average export price compared to January 2025, despite lower physical volumes. Indonesia is therefore entering the year with more pricing resilience than volume momentum.

Products

Raw L. vannamei remains the backbone of the industry. In 2025, volumes reached 97,192 MT (+2% YoY). After a sharp October contraction (-60% YoY), December rebounded strongly (+31% YoY). January 2026 stands at 8,183 MT, down 7% YoY — broadly in line with the overall national trend.

Raw P. monodon had a difficult 2025, ending at 8,566 MT (-16% YoY). However, January 2026 shows a notable recovery to 587 MT (+68% YoY), albeit from a low base.

Cooked and marinated products — a key value segment — grew 9% in 2025 to 56,612 MT. Yet, in January 2026, volumes dropped sharply to 3,739 MT (-24% YoY), reflecting weaker demand in Western retail and foodservice channels.

Breaded shrimp declined 17% in 2025 to 8,345 MT. January 2026 shows 684 MT (-8% YoY), suggesting the category remains under pressure, particularly in the US market.

Markets

The United States remains Indonesia’s largest market, but structural pressure continues. In 2025, exports to the US fell 8% to 125,588 MT, with extreme volatility during the year. October collapsed by 86% YoY before December rebounded strongly. January 2026 stands at 10,408 MT (-11% YoY), confirming continued weakness in the US channel.

Japan, which grew 6% in 2025, starts 2026 slightly lower at 2,285 MT (-7% YoY). The EU-27, despite strong 2025 growth (+41%), shows a sharp January contraction to 521 MT (-27% YoY). Canada also weakens significantly in January (-47% YoY).

In contrast, Asian markets provide partial compensation. China, which grew 27% in 2025, expands further in January 2026 to 1,423 MT (+32% YoY). Taiwan grows 28% YoY, Malaysia surges 239% YoY, and Vietnam increases 276% YoY.

While Western markets show a dip at the start of the year, several Asian destinations are clearly absorbing additional Indonesian volumes. This shift does not fully offset US and EU softness, but it does cushion the overall decline and highlights Indonesia’s increasing regional diversification.

January 2026 therefore reflects a two-speed export landscape: pressure in traditional Western markets, but strengthening demand across parts of Asia — helping stabilize value even as volumes remain slightly below last year.
