June Performance
US shrimp imports closed the first half of 2025 on a strong note, with June volumes reaching 72,763 metric tons, up 36% year-on-year. Import value also climbed sharply, up 47% to \$613 million. The growth was broad-based across product categories, with peeled frozen up 46% to 37,940 MT, shell-on frozen up 20% to 17,127 MT, cooked and marinated up 41% to 10,882 MT, and breaded up 35% to 6,259 MT. Among suppliers, Vietnam saw the largest year-on-year jump (+52%), followed by Indonesia (+44%), India (+44%), and Ecuador (+32%).
Q1 vs Q2
Q1 imports totalled 205,771 MT, growing 13% compared to the same period in 2024, with value up 22%. Q2 volumes were slightly higher at 207,947 MT but grew at a faster pace of 23% year-on-year, while value surged 35%. The stronger Q2 was driven by an exceptional April (+38% YoY in volume), the June surge, and stable performance in May despite slower growth in that month.
H1 2025
For the full first half, US shrimp imports reached 413,718 MT, 18% above H1 2024. Import value hit \$3.45 billion, up 28%. The growth trend was supported by steady increases in peeled frozen shrimp and cooked products, a recovery in shell-on frozen after a slow Q1, and resilient breaded shrimp demand despite some month-to-month volatility.
Product Categories
Peeled frozen shrimp remained the largest and fastest-growing category, totalling 211,148 MT in H1 (+25% YoY) and accounting for just over half of total imports. Shell-on frozen increased modestly by 3% to 106,389 MT, with a Q2 rebound offsetting earlier declines. Cooked and marinated products grew 28% to 62,020 MT, showing sustained demand for ready-to-eat formats. Breaded shrimp rose 11% to 30,627 MT, supported by strong June growth after a weaker May.
Suppliers
India strengthened its lead, shipping 161,835 MT in H1 (+24% YoY), with consistently high monthly volumes. Ecuador followed with 113,091 MT (+14%), including an exceptional April (+102%). Indonesia supplied 70,959 MT (+14%), boosted by strong late-quarter shipments. Vietnam’s exports rose 13% to 28,930 MT, while Thailand increased 21% to 12,816 MT, despite a weak May.
Outlook
If current import growth rates were to continue into the second half of the year, US shrimp imports could surpass 825,000 MT in 2025, setting a new record both in volume and value. However, such an outcome is doubtful. The recent escalation of the US tariff war under President Trump—introducing higher duties on several seafood-exporting countries—will likely disrupt established supply chains. These changes are expected to alter both sourcing patterns and pricing, with potential shifts in demand as buyers adjust their procurement strategies. H2 performance will therefore depend not only on underlying consumer demand but also on how quickly exporters and importers adapt to the new tariff landscape.
