The Global Shrimp Feed Manufacturing Landscape: A Helicopter View

Image
Feed Report

While we’re always quick to say that the shrimp industry is very fragmented, the feed segment differs from other segments of the value chain. In countries such as Ecuador and Vietnam, the shrimp feed manufacturing segment is already very much consolidated and will consolidate even further over the next couple of years. Other countries are likely to follow the same path. As consolidation increases, a relatively small number of large global and regional players from Asia, Europe, and the US is slowly strengthening its grip on the industry as a whole. With that development, the responsibility of these players to drive innovation and help farmers be successful increases. This report, while not an in-depth analysis of shrimp feed manufacturing, provides an overview of the shrimp feed manufacturing landscape and the players that shape it in Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam, as well as of the most important multinational players that drive consolidation.

This report is sponsored by: Bentoli, BioIberica, Phileo by Lesaffre, Aquaculture Stewardship Council, DSM Animal Nutrition and the Global Shrimp Forum

The shrimp industry is fascinating. It is a fragmented industry, largely driven by family-owned companies and hundreds of thousands of farmers around the world. More recently, corporate players, banks, investment funds, and start-ups have entered the arena and started to change the structure and dynamics of the industry. There is one thing that all these people have in common: passion for the shrimp industry. I would like to match your passion with my blog. Once a month, I will write about a topic that fascinates me.

Bangladesh’s Shrimp Industry Spiralling Down, But Some Try to Change the Tide

Image
Shrimp Blog October 2024

Bangladesh's export-oriented shrimp industry suffers from a supply shortage and a lack of market access. Exports have gradually dropped from around 55,000 MT in 2016 to only 25,000 MT in 2023. Around 17,500 MT would be accounted for by black tiger shrimp, and the remainder would consist of a combination of farmed freshwater prawn and wild-caught shrimp. The EU accounts for 70% of the export volume, the UK 12%, and the US 6%.

An Update of the US Major Shrimp Suppliers—Santa Priscila Turned into Unchallenged Leader

In April 2022, Angel Rubio from Urner Barry by Expana and I published a blog summarizing the companies driving US shrimp supplies. Two years later, we think it is time for an update. In this blog, I will present Angel’s analysis of Urner Barry by Expana’s Foreign Trade Database, enabling us to identify the US’s leading shrimp suppliers.

Accusations about Shrimp Farming's Role in Widespread, Continuous Mangrove Destruction in India Unfounded

Image
Artistic rendition of mangroves from above in Shrimp Insights brand colors

Recent reports have accused India of continuous, widespread mangrove destruction through its expansion of shrimp farming on the country's east coast. But is this claim a fair one? Satellite imagery analysis by Indian space tech start-up GalaxEye Space using its own aquaculture pond database and Clark Labs' mangrove database (see Image 1) prove these accusations to be unfounded. Their analyses show that from 1999 to 2022, only 0.3% of the total land covered with mangroves was converted into fish and shrimp ponds.
